Substance Misuse Treatment

Substance misuse is common among patients in primary care settings. Our approach to office-based treatment includes identifying and managing substance misuse disorders and developing specific strategies to promote behavior change.

• Screening – Brief validated screening tools allow rapid and efficient identification of substance misuse, including prescription medication misuse.
• Brief assessment and intervention – After a positive screening, a brief assessment with our substance misuse counselor is offered to address any concerns. Brief counseling or more intensive ongoing follow-up and reevaluation are available at our office.
• Referral for treatment – For patients with substance misuse issues, options include a combination of counseling, referral to specialty treatment, and pharmacotherapy (e.g., drug tapering, naltrexone, buprenorphine, or methadone) treatments.
• Medication Assisted Treatment – Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is the use of medications in combination with counseling and behavioral therapies to provide a “whole-patient” approach to the treatment of substance misuse disorders. Medications used in MAT are approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and MAT programs are clinically driven and tailored to meet each patient’s needs.

You may be living with mental illness or intimate partner violence along with a substance misuse disorder. Our care coordination team can connect you with other services to address social and economic barriers to healthy living.

We use a motivational rather than a confrontational communication style during screening, counseling, and treatment to help you achieve your goals.
